Giveaway and Review: Artfully Embroidered - Motifs and Patterns forBags and More

It's been awhile since I've posted a book review, hasn't it? Well, today I have one to review AND give away!

By Naoko Shimoda
Interweave/F+W; $24.99

This is an unusual book in that it's not your typical, cutesy, whimsy-filled book on embroidery. Rather, this book focuses on quite the opposite: elegant, unusual, artistic and specific.

There are 17 projects in this book, mostly bags, totes or purses, but that doesn't mean you have to be limited to that specifically. These designs would be beautiful on a handbag or an evening gown. You could even add them to a table runner and choose a few elements from the pattern to a set of dinner napkins for a sophisticated dinner at home. I love the goldfish in particular:
{isn't that beautiful?}

I love that the artist/author has stayed consistent with her style throughout the book.

All the projects have a clean, simple look to them. What I mean by that is, she hasn't overdone anything. The bags start off with the basics, they're not terribly fussy:

The instructions to assemble the bag are quite clear. It's only when you add the embroidery do they look like they're complicated.

Thankfully, she also makes the embroidery process easy to follow with clearly illustrated and written instructions.
{suggested tools and supplied info}

Embroidery is an art form to me, and one that I especially enjoy doing. I have loved looking through this book and seeing a completely different way of practicing this art.

I'm giving away my copy of the book. Please leave a comment below, telling me who inspires you the most. I will choose a winner on September 16, 2015. Check back on September 17 to see if I drew your name!

Happy reading!
-Kristi

  1. Different people inspire me in different parts of my life, but my mom is definitely the person who crosses over so many facets; creative pursuits, cooking for my family, volunteering at school...

  2. What gorgeous work! I agree, it is unusual to see non-whimsical/quirky embroidery books. I am inspired by so many quilters, fabric designers etc, but the most consistently inspirational for me is Anna Maria Horner.

  3. Who inspires me the most?...Creatively, I'd have to say Alison Glass - fabric design, embroidery, appliqué, quilting - she does it all and is raising a family too!

  4. Creative people, in general, inspires me. It's amazing how some people can take a raw element (a piece of fabric, a ball of yarn, etc.) and make something beautiful!

  5. I love seeing windows and man hole covers and patterns in Victorian tiles - I get inspiration from everywhere and everything!

  6. My mom inspires me even though she passed 5 years ago. She taught me how to sew and I'd like to think she would love my adventure into quilting

  8. What inspires me the most is the beauty seen in a design and/or the if the design offers the learning of a new technique. Will I learn something new and will I create something that is a thing of beauty or will make the onlooker think about what is going on in the design.
    Thank you for this chance to win a great book!
    Have a super great sewing and stitching day!

  9. Creative people of all kinds inspire me, but my true deep-down inspiration comes from my mom and my grandmother. My grandma (who just turned 90 last week!) always taught me that you can make something wonderful from nothing - Depression-era resourcefulness at it's finest. And my mom is so thoughtful and talented - I hope she passed along a fraction of that to me!

  10. I'm inspired by all sorts of artists and designers, but my brother is the one I can bounce ideas off. He is an illustrator so we critique eachothers work. It's great to have that.

  11. I am inspired by so many women who generously blog about their projects, sharing tips, tutorials and wonderful photos. I keep ideas written down, pinned on pinterest, and bookmarked so I can go back and try my hand at each when I have time. I would be lost without my passion for creativity!
