You Are My Sunshine

My daughter, who is now 2 1/2 years old, loves it when I sing to her. Every nap and bedtime of every day, we sing several songs together. Among the favorites are: Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star, The ABC's, Baa Baa Black Sheep, Rock-A-Bye Baby and Take Me Out To The Ball Game.

Well, the other day, we were singing our usual songs to each other but she wanted me to stay "one more minute" (which, in Remy Speak sounds like 'Mum more minute', how cute is she?) and sing her one more (ok, "mum more") song. I tried resinging one of the old stand-by's but she wasn't having it. She wanted a new song. So...in a slight panic (I've only been a mom for 2 1/2 years and I never did much babysitting to learn other kid songs!) I dug deep into the depths of my memory and came up with "You Are My Sunshine" and sang it as best as I could, which isn't very good since I'm a horrible singer. She loved it so much that it has become our new favorite song. Even more favorite than "Take Me Out To The Ball Game". We sing it several times a day and she always, always, always "grabs" my sunshine and takes it away. She either eats it or gives it back by stuffing it down the front of my shirt.

So, I did a little research and have discovered the original lyrics to this little lovely diddy and am now going to share them with you. Enjoy!

Doris Day
You are my sunshine

The other night dear
As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you
In my arms
When I awoke dear
I was mistaken
and I hung my head and cried

You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
You'll never know dear
How much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

I'll always love you
and make you happy
If you will only
Stay the same
but if you leave me
To love another
You'll regret it all someday

You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
You'll never know dear
How much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine away

You told me once dear
You really loved me
and no one else could come between
but now you've left me and Iove another
You have shattered all of my dreams

You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are grey
You'll never know dear how much I love you
Please don't take my sunshine

  1. You are so lucky to be able to sing to your little bean...my kids would put up the hand, waving at my mouth saying "no momma, don't sing!" Sigh, enjoy your moments!

  2. Yes, I am lucky. One day she'll beg me to shut up, I'm embarrassing her in front of her friends! But, for now, she's my precious little girl and she adores the warbling and squawking that is my singing. Man, I love that kid!

  3. The late former governor of Louisiana, Jimmie Davis, co-wrote that song and sang it. It was sort of his "trademark"! If I'm not mistaken, he named his horse "Sunshine." Davis was a native of Jackson Parish, Louisiana.

  4. I sang that to my grandson, then I made him his own sunshine pillow/plush to nap with when I wasn't around. He calls it his "Sunny Sunshine".

  5. That is so sweet. I hope my little girl hangs on to these memories, too.
